Riboflavin is a water soluble vitamin. Riboflavin plays an essential role in all the oxidative processes on which man and other organisms depend. A reduced activity of flavin-dependent enzymes therefore tends to manifest itself in reduced consumption of oxygen rather than in a single or specific block in intermediary metabolism. Riboflavin deficiency in man can result in lesions of the mucocutaneous surfaces of the mouth (angular stomatitis, cheilosis, atrophic lingual papillae, glossitis, magenta tongue), seborrhoeic skin lesions, surface lesions of the genitalia and vascularisation of the cornea. |
