Smokers - 'Several recent studies have indicated that smokers have an increased turnover of vitamin C. To maintain their body pool and circulating levels near those of non-smokers, their intake would need to be greater by up to 80 mg/day.'

There is a need for more research to identify the possible benefits or detrimental effects of high intakes of vitamin C. There are possible risks associated with intakes of grams/day including diarrhoea, increased production of oxalate and hence kidney stones in a small group of individuals who produce a particularly high amount of oxalate. The excess intake is therefore set at 1000mg/day.
