Non-starch polysaccharides are the major component of the plant cell wall and the best single index of the dietary fibre concept. There is no data on the physiological effects of NSP in children. However it is likely that such effects are related to body size and the Panel recommended that children should have proportionately lower NSP intakes. Children of less than two years should not take such foods at the expense of more energy rich foods which they require for adequate growth. The comparison figures for fibre for children are therefore calculated using the EARs for food energy as the proportioning factor. Caution in the use of sources of NSP containing phytate (particularly unprocessed wheat bran) is advised, especially in elderly people.
